Sign Types, Categories & Compliance Requirements
(based upon original ADAAG guidelines)
Category 1: Room Identification Signs
Room identification signs are signs that identify permanent rooms and spaces. These signs include raised text, braille, and pictographs or symbols.
- Raised text and braille required
- Pictograms required when needed (pictograms can be raised, sub-surface or surface printed)
Category 2: Directional & Informational Signs
Directional and informational signs are signs that direct you to and from rooms, and inform about rooms/spaces. These signs may include text, symbols, and directional arrows.
- Raised text and braille is not required. (can be used if desired)
- Minimum letter height applies.
- Pictograms are not required.
Category 3
This category of signs are used to identify, direct to, and inform about accessible features and elements.
- Raised text and braille is not required. (can be used if desired)
- Minimum letter height applies.
- Pictograms are required.
Category 4
This category of signs are a type that are not required to comply.
- Raised text and braille is not required. (can be used if desired)
- No minimum letter heights are required.
- Pictograms are not required.
